Paste text that is in capitals or with every word capitalized, then press Sentence in the toolbar. Each sentence starts with a capital and the rest of the text becomes lowercase.

How sentence starts are detected

The converter lowercases the text, then capitalizes the first letter of the text and the first letter after a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space. Line breaks on their own do not start a new sentence, so a list item that continues a sentence keeps its lowercase start.

Where sentence case is the right choice

Text in capitals reads as shouting and is slower to read, because word shapes disappear. Many style guides, including the UK Government Digital Service and Microsoft's writing style guide, recommend sentence case for headings and buttons as well as body text. It is also the quickest way to repair a paragraph that was typed with Caps Lock on, or copied from a source that capitalizes every word.

What you will need to check

An ellipsis followed by a space counts as a sentence end, so the word after it is capitalized; change it back by hand if the sentence continues. A converter also cannot tell a name from an ordinary word, so after converting look for:

  • Proper nouns: people, places, companies, days and months become lowercase (monday, paris).
  • The word I: it becomes i in the middle of a sentence.
  • Acronyms: USA becomes usa.
  • Abbreviations with a full stop: after e.g. or Dr. the next word is capitalized, because the full stop looks like the end of a sentence.

Find and Replace fixes repeated names in one step. Type the lowercase form, turn on case sensitivity, enter the correct spelling and choose Replace All.

Convert part of a document

Select the paragraph or heading you want to change before pressing the button; the rest of the editor stays as it is. Each conversion is a single undo step. The counts beside the editor do not change, because changing case never adds or removes characters.

Sentence case also makes text easier to translate and to scan on small screens, because readers rely on the shape of lowercase words. Need headline style instead? Use the title case converter. For every option side by side, see the case converter.
