WordPico is a fast, clean, and reliable text metrics utility designed for writers, editors, copywriters, and developers who require accurate word and character statistics without privacy compromises.

Accurate Counting Methodology

Online word counters often disagree on metrics because natural language segmentation can be complex. WordPico uses standardized Unicode text segmentation principles to ensure consistent, predictable results:

• Words: Segmented using Unicode standard word boundaries. Contractions (e.g., don't, it's) and hyphenated compound words (e.g., state-of-the-art) remain single tokens. CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) characters are recognized as distinct semantic units.
• Characters (All vs. No Spaces): The editor's 200,000 character maximum limit is enforced in UTF-16 code units (following standard HTML maxlength behavior). In our analytics cards, character metrics report Unicode grapheme clusters (user-perceived characters) as well as counts excluding ASCII and Unicode whitespace.
• Sentences & Paragraphs: Sentence evaluation is an approximation based on standard Unicode sentence break segmentation; certain abbreviations (such as Dr. or Mr.) may be segmented differently depending on the browser's language model. Paragraphs are determined by splitting text on blank line separations.
• Unique Words: Case-normalized lexical types, allowing writers to evaluate vocabulary variety and repetitive phrasing.

Reading & Speaking Time Estimates

Estimates are based on established empirical benchmarks:

• Reading Time: Estimated at an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute (WPM).
• Speaking Time: Estimated at a natural conversational or presentation pace of 130 words per minute (WPM).

These figures are guides for timing essays, speeches, video scripts, and presentation slides. Actual pacing varies depending on technical density and delivery style.

Keyword Density & N-Gram Analysis

WordPico extracts 1-word (unigrams), 2-word (bigrams), and 3-word (trigrams) phrase sequences to assist in search engine optimization (SEO) and readability tuning. A curated stop-word filter can be toggled on to exclude function words (such as the, and, in, is) and focus on meaningful core terminology.

Local Document Storage

Everything typed or pasted into WordPico is processed directly in your browser. Drafts saved by the autosave feature reside entirely within your browser's local storage (localStorage) on your own device and are never transmitted to our servers or stored in remote databases.
